I am Andrew Jackson and I’m running for the At-large City Council seat in Virginia Beach. I am honored to pursue the opportunity to serve the citizens of this great city.
Born in Cleveland Ohio, I have lived in the Virginia Beach area for over 30 years. I served our country in the U.S. Navy for twenty years and retired as a Chief Radioman. I attended Tidewater Community College and the University of Maryland (European Extension), and completed a Technology course in Cryptology operation, training, level I and II maintenance, and logistics support in Zug, Switzerland, numerous training across the country and Canada. While I have traveled the world both in the Navy and as a civilian after military retirement, Virginia Beach has been home for many years working in banking and finance, corporate training and human resource development, and later small business. An opportunity to serve in a civilian capacity on a Navy/State Department contract took me to work in the Middle East for ten years before returning to the finance industry as a corporate trainer in human resource development.
Having served in our nation’s military in a leadership role, I’ve witnessed first-hand the dedication of men and women who heed to call to duty. I have witnessed the power of diversity when bringing all available talent together for a common cause. I learned discipline, honor and commitment in the United States Navy and I have traveled the world. I will put this wide spectrum of experiences to work in making decisions and bringing common sense solutions to everyday challenges.
I have authored several training programs, in particular, programs for young men that have been used throughout the Hampton Roads area and beyond. I am the past President of the Men's Ministry of the Historic First Baptist Church at Bute Street in Norfolk, past Secretary of the Men's Division of the Baptist General Convention of Virginia, a coach in youth sports, community issues, and those of the School Board. I am married to Carolyn Rogers-Jackson my wife of 26 years.
I understand how seemingly small things can have a significant impact on the bottom line of the city but also that of a “kitchen table” family budget. We must work on issues that build a stronger community. A community that provides good paying jobs, a community that is forward thinking in terms of alternative energy as well as preservation of our environment, transportation issues (regional and local), and of course sustainable growth. A leader that looks at economic development as a means of inclusion of all it’s citizen’s talent and skill. I am excited to be able to give back and be a voice for the people. Virginia Beach faces significant challenges. We cannot overcome these challenges without the input and effort of all our citizens. My task as your councilman is to communicate with you on a regular basis, the pros and cons, considerations, perspective, purpose and effect of my vote. It is for you to assess how hard I have worked, and how skillful my politics are on your behalf.
I look forward to working for and with you to make Virginia Beach a better place for the future.
